Meet Culture Clash.
This collective of performance artists creates theatre by devising around the experiences of Latino people in the United States. They use comedic humor to express Latino identity. Another "hybrid" Latino artist you may want to look into is Guillermo Gomez Pena.

ReplyDeleteHere is a link to an article posted in the LA Times titled, "Culture Clash: Latino Satire on a 'Mission'". Granted this article is a bit dated , but i felt it retained valuable information nonetheless.
The article emphasis how Culture Clash focuses on the use of humor and satire is to comment on racial and political issues. here, Culture clash was focusing on the struggles of the Californian Indians and how their culture has throughout history being diluted or nearly whipped out by Anglo- Europeans.

ReplyDeleteI chose to do a little research on Guillermo Gomez Pena, and what I found is amazing. This video is a little introspective, and Pena focuses on the "how"s and "why"s of performance art and the impact that it makes on society.
I chose to focus on one of the cofounders of Culture Clash, his name is Richard Montoya. He recently did a play called The River, here he got very good reviews. There is an article describing his work in the play The River, " writes with uninhibited presence and confidence, though "The River" has more melancholy than much of his earlier work." The article mentions how this play correlates with his later and past work the the Califas project.
ReplyDeleteLater at the end the article briefly mention Montoya's little brother "Director Sean San José beautifully wrangles the ambitious project, efficiently modulating Montoya's satire and poetry in an appropriately rough and hopeful manner. There is additional poetry by Joe Montoya Jr., the playwright's brother."
